I Feel Unsafe Privacy Notice

Last updated 10 October 2026. This notice explains how I Feel Unsafe, the personal safety alert in GoodLifeTask, handles your data. It adds to our main Privacy Policy, which covers everything else.

I Feel Unsafe is not an emergency service

I Feel Unsafe alerts your family and the contacts you chose. It never contacts the police, ambulance, fire or any emergency service. In an emergency, call your local emergency number (for example 911, 112 or 999).

1. What I Feel Unsafe is

I Feel Unsafe is a personal safety alert for your family and the contacts you choose. You can use it in the GoodLifeTask phone apps and on the web. When you start it, the people you chose are told you may need help and are sent your location.

There is no test mode. “Send a test alert” sends a real alert to your contacts.

2. When we collect data

I Feel Unsafe collects data only during a session you start: by tapping the I Feel Unsafe button on your phone once, or by tapping I FEEL UNSAFE — ALERT NOW on the web (the web asks you to confirm first). There is no shake, voice or automatic trigger.

A session ends when you stop it with “I’m safe” — on your phone a separate button you hold for 2 seconds, on the web a button you tap — or automatically after 6 hours. Collection stops when the session ends. You can have one open session at a time.

You set I Feel Unsafe up once on the GoodLifeTask website, and can change it there at any time; the phone app only switches it on and off. Before your first session you accept the I Feel Unsafe terms and add at least one contact. If you are a member of a family in GoodLifeTask, you can skip setup: your first press records that you accepted the terms and adds the other family members as your contacts.

3. What we collect

  • Location: latitude, longitude, accuracy and time. On the phone, about every 30 seconds — also in the background. iPhone shows its location indicator, and Android shows a notification saying “I Feel Unsafe is sharing your location”. On the web, about once a minute while the page is open. A session can start without a location.
  • Photos: only while “Photos when I tap the I Feel Unsafe button during an alert” or video clips are on in I Feel Unsafe setup (photos are off by default; video clips are on by default) and you have accepted the I Feel Unsafe terms of 9 October 2026 or later. Then, after you tap the I Feel Unsafe button during an alert, your phone takes a photo with the front camera and one with the back camera every 15 seconds; after two taps, twice as often. This continues until the alert stops or you change mode, for up to 1 hour. On the web, if the photos switch is on, your browser takes one photo with each camera when you start I Feel Unsafe there and on the first high alert; “Send photos now” during a session does the same whenever photos are allowed. The files carry no location data (EXIF). Your phone shows its camera indicator while photos are taken. At most 1,200 photos per session. Photos can include other people and your surroundings. We tell you this during setup and when we ask for camera permission.
  • Video clips with sound: only while “Video clips with sound when I hold the button” is on in I Feel Unsafe setup (it is on by default; you can switch it off) and you have accepted the I Feel Unsafe terms of 9 October 2026 or later. When you hold the I Feel Unsafe button on your phone, it records 10-second clips with sound for 2 minutes — from both cameras at the same time on phones that support it, otherwise switching between the back and front cameras; “Record more” adds another 2 minutes, up to 4 minutes of recording ahead. Recording runs only while the I Feel Unsafe screen is open on your phone — never in the background or on the locked screen. If you have not allowed the microphone, clips are recorded without sound. At most 96 clips per session. The phone shows that it is recording for the whole time, and its own camera and microphone indicators. Clips recorded before you stop the alert may still be uploaded for up to 30 minutes after it ends. Clips can include other people, their voices and your surroundings. The web does not record video.
  • Event log: for each session, when it started, was escalated and stopped; each alert sent (to which contact, by which channel, and whether it was delivered or failed); photos and video clips uploaded; links opened; and failed PIN attempts.

If the terms you accepted are older than 9 October 2026, I Feel Unsafe keeps working — your contacts still get your alerts and location — but no photos or video are taken from your phone until you accept the updated terms.

We do not collect device details, battery level, voice messages, or contacts from your phone’s address book.

4. Who receives what

Your contacts (up to 5). For each contact you can switch email, SMS and push on or off.

  • By email and SMS: “<your name> pressed I Feel Unsafe and may need help”, your last known location as a Google Maps link, and the time. After a high alert, they get the high alert and a location update every 60 seconds. When it ends, they are told you are safe, the session ended, or it timed out.
  • One message with a private link — never one message per clip. The link opens a page that shows your name, whether the alert is still active, your last location as a map link, your latest photos (up to the latest 60, each shot shown as front and back camera side by side) and your video clips. The page is not indexed by search engines and has no tracking. The link works while the alert is active and for 24 hours after it ends, and stops working at once if you remove that contact. Anyone who has a contact’s link can open it until then.
  • Photos and video clips on that page are served through signed links that expire after 60 minutes; the page fetches new ones when it refreshes.
  • Replies to the alert email do not reach you. It is sent from our notification address. Your contacts should reach you another way, for example by phone.
  • Contacts who have a GoodLifeTask account also get a push notification and an in-app banner.

Your family members in GoodLifeTask get:

  • a push notification with your name only — no location;
  • a message in family chat with your location link, updated as you move, your latest photos and the number of photos and video clips, with links to see them all, then the high alert, safe or ended message;
  • an in-app banner with your latest location.

Family photo and video links expire after 1 hour and check that the viewer is still a member of the family.

5. Your contacts’ data

For each contact you add their name, email and/or phone number, and your relationship. If you are in a family, the other members are added automatically. We use these details to send your I Feel Unsafe alerts.

We do not ask your contacts to agree before they receive alerts. You confirm that you have told them they may receive I Feel Unsafe alerts from you, and that they are happy to. Please tell them that replies to the alert email will not reach you.

6. Storage and security

  • Photos and video clips are encrypted on our servers with AES-256-GCM, using a key for your account that is itself encrypted with a server key. They are stored outside the public web folder and are only shown through signed links that expire.
  • Locations, contacts and session records are protected by our normal server security. They are not separately encrypted.
  • Our logs hold only IDs and alert types — never addresses, message text, links or coordinates.
  • A stop PIN, if you set one, is stored only as a hash.

7. Service providers

  • DigitalOcean hosts our servers in the United States.
  • Resend sends the alert emails.
  • Twilio sends the alert text messages (SMS).
  • Apple Push Notification service, Google Firebase and Web Push deliver push notifications.

Google Maps is used only as a link in the alert. If someone opens that link, Google receives the location in it.

8. How long we keep it

Photos and video clips are deleted automatically 30 days after the session ends, if you have not deleted them before then.

After an alert ends, you — the person who pressed I Feel Unsafe — can download all its photos and video clips in one zip file, or delete them, from the I Feel Unsafe page on the GoodLifeTask website (“Past alerts”). 24 hours after the alert ends, we send you a reminder by email and push notification to download or delete them. Your family members and contacts can view the photos and clips during the alert and for 24 hours after it ends, but they cannot download them all or delete them.

I Feel Unsafe sessions, locations, event logs and I Feel Unsafe chat messages are kept until you delete your account. There is no automatic deletion of these by age.

When you delete your account, it is locked straight away and can be restored for 30 days. After that, all your I Feel Unsafe data — profile, contacts, sessions, locations, events, photos, video clips and your family messages — is permanently deleted. We keep an anonymised record of the deletion for up to 7 years, as the main Privacy Policy explains.

9. Your choices

  • Stop PIN: set a PIN of 4–8 digits. Once set, it is needed to stop a session, so someone holding your phone cannot quietly stop the alert. Failed attempts are logged and limited.
  • Channels per contact: switch email, SMS and push on or off for each contact. Add, change or remove contacts at any time.
  • Photos: switch “Photos when I tap the I Feel Unsafe button during an alert” on or off in I Feel Unsafe setup on the website. While video clips are on, tap photos are allowed too. Your alerts work either way.
  • Video clips: switch “Video clips with sound when I hold the button” on or off in I Feel Unsafe setup on the website. Your alerts work either way. You are responsible for recording lawfully where you are — some places require everyone’s consent to record sound.
  • Permissions: you can turn off location, camera, microphone or notifications in your phone’s settings. I Feel Unsafe then cannot send that information — without the microphone, video clips are recorded without sound.
  • Stopping: hold “I’m safe” on your phone for 2 seconds (or tap “I am safe” on the web) at any time. Sessions also end after 6 hours, and your contacts are told it timed out.
  • Deleting your account deletes your I Feel Unsafe data, as described above.

10. Children and families

I Feel Unsafe has no separate settings for children. A child who is a member of a family in GoodLifeTask can start I Feel Unsafe like any other member, and receives other members’ I Feel Unsafe alerts in the same way. The parent or guardian who manages the family should explain I Feel Unsafe to younger members. The age rules in the main Privacy Policy apply.

11. Changes to this notice

If I Feel Unsafe changes what it collects or who receives it, we will update this notice and the date at the top first. If the change is significant, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
